Psoriatic arthritis is an arthritic joint disease with chronic skin scaling and fingernail abnormalities. Physicians treat several different forms of psoriatic arthritis, in some patients it affects the small joints: fingers and toes. Psoriatic arthritis symptoms usually involve joint stiffness which is worse early in the morning. At times, it may involve the joints of the body symmetrically just like rheumatoid arthritis. Other psoriatic arthritis symptoms include inflammation of the spine as well as the sacrum, stiffness in the buttocks, lower back, neck and upper back.
Though psoriasis can be genetic but it goes worse due to stress, alcohol consumption and smoking. It can occur at any age but mostly it is found in an age group of 15-20 in the beginning. But psoriatic arthritis occurs between ages of 30-50. It is found that, more than 9 million people suffer from these diseases. Psoriatic arthritis is considered an arthritis that will affect the spine, and may also mirror the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Most often, pain and swelling is noticed in the wrists, knees and ankles, as well as fingers and toes.
There are several causes associated to this type of arthritis. However, the exact cause of this disease is unknown. It is believed that a blend of several genetic and immune factors in conjunction with several environmental factors is responsible for the occurrence of this disease. Patients suffering from this disease may suffer from inflammation of the skin. Usually the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis come slowly and in mild cases. They include apparent pain and redness of the eye, swelling and stiffness accompanied by pain in the joints and the occurrence of grey or silver patches on the scalp, knees and elbows as well as the lower end of the spine. Fingers and sometimes the toes may swell resulting in limited capacity for movement.
One treatment for immune system imbalance (Th2 Dominance) is raising glutathione levels. Glutathione levels in antigen presenting cells determine whether Th1, or, Th2 response patterns predominate. Increasing glutathione levels helps reduce Th2 dominance. Certain medications are available for treating arthritis. The arthritis treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation and relieving pain. Some over the counter medications and tropical creams can be taken in consultation with health care provider for relieving arthritis symptoms.
Treatment for psoriatic arthritis will depend largely on how severe symptoms are in the individual being treated. Since there are different types of psoriatic arthritis, this will also affect how the disease is treated. If one type of treatment does not work, it can be changed out for another that may have better success.
