A mini-stroke is called a transient ischemic attack or a TIA in the medical community. The symptoms that are experienced with this type of stroke are similar to the symptoms that are experienced by those that have a major stroke. However, the symptoms do not last nearly as long as those do that accompany a major stroke. Strokes occur when an artery to the brain becomes either blocked by a blood clot (thrombotic stroke) or when an artery bursts due to an aneurysm (hemorrhagic stroke).
Brain tissue deprived of oxygen dies within a few minutes causing part of the body controlled by that portion of the brain affected to lose function. Keeping your heart healthy by eating right, getting an adequate amount of exercise (you don't have to overdo), making sure to get restful sleep and addressing any health issues that might lead to a stroke. Remember to see your doctor before you begin any diet or exercise program. Even too much diet and exercise can be detrimental to your heart and brain.
Women may complain of different symptoms than men when entering and emergency room. Often, the symptoms women complain about are different from the list and because of the discrepancy, women are more apt to be checked for something other than a stroke. If a patient comes in to hospital and symptoms are resolving, this usually suggests a TIA. A scan, however, is usually still done to confirm this. The aims of treatment here are to lower the risks of the person going on to having a full-blown stroke in the immediate future.
Medications sometimes play some part in the prevention of recurring strokes as well as in the treatment. The most effective treatments, however, involve engaging the brain so it can recover and result in recovery. Well, most stroke treatment plans involve a lot of physical therapy and the re-learning of speech and common habitual things. In essence, one has to re-train the brain to "remember" whatever information was lost in the action of the stroke itself. If the patient is bed ridden, a hospital bed may be necessary.
Special beds will help to prevent the incidence of decubitus ulcers from forming on the bony prominences of the body such as the elbow, heels, and pelvis bones. Therapy involves regaining independence to move through the help of Physical Therapists (PTs) and to cope with the deficits of stroke through Occupational Therapists. The basics still applies, though, when it comes to getting the right nutrition and exercise.
