Muscle Cramps Causes

By alice rose at 2010-10-11 01:48:14
Muscle cramps are defined as painful and involuntary contractions of the muscle which usually manifests itself in your leg calf muscle although any muscle can be affected. One of the easiest ways to alleviate the pain and discomfort is using massage and stretching exercises. So, step one involves having a rethink about your diet . we suggest you cut out or eliminate fast food, junk food and processed food (sugar, white flour, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, flavours, etc), you may well cure your muscle cramps altogether. And at the same time, improve your overall health.

Lack of regular exercise and then engaging in a weekend sporting activity may also lead to stiffness as your muscles aren't accustomed to tension and strain. The key is to keep up a regular routine of exercising to avoid "surprising" your muscles. Sodium and other electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium have been mentioned in the past as possibly causing exercise-induced muscle cramps, although there is little evidence to support electrolyte imbalance as a cause.

It wasn't so long ago that visualization techniques, stretching and yoga were introduced into sport and running and made an impact. When it comes to training and exercise, sometimes people are very impatient to do a stretching routine before they go for a run; most people don't want to waste there workout time by stretching their muscles. It doesn't matter where you workout, on the beach, in the gym or at home if you don't give your body the attention it needs you could find yourself suffering from painful muscle cramps.

Muscle cramps can also occur among athletes especially when they are dehydrated. You must increase salty foods after exercise as that would help retain fluids and prevent dehydration. You must drink water in proportion to the amount you sweat when you exercise. The best way to get this carbohydrate will be, without doubt, from a sports drink and not from a gel. Gels will deliver a lot of carbohydrate but processing this heavy load will take longer and may cause an initial 'dip' in energy when you really need it and will require more water to help process it.

Cramps like this are common, and most active people experience them at one time or another. Rest the muscle and gently stretch and massage it until the cramping eases. With patience, you should be able to get back to your activity fairly quickly. If your cramps are very frequent or prolonged, see your doctor to rule out other problems.
